F10 M5 to M6 Gran Coupe - anyone done that?.....
Discussion
I thought about it and then, 23mins into the test drive, I saw my reflection in a shop window.
And that was that!
[The same thing happened a few years back when I drove a 911.....it must be fate!]
They look nice, but they're is just something about their image that I can't accept.
I really believe that the F10 M5 is the best-looking M-car on sale today.....and the best one too!
PS: Yes, I have checked my M5 reflection.....I look just like BMW man, especially with my shades on!!!

I thought about it, test drove the M6 GC, but couldn't pull the trigger as it felt just too similar to the M5 and it was a lot of cash for a small change. The interior of the M6 was better and there were certain details like the frameless doors which were appealing, but rear headroom is terrible and I agree the M5 looks marginally better - I just wanted a change. Ended up going for an RS6, a change I have been very happy with.
It's each to their own really. Personally i think the M6GC is a stunning car & had they been the same price or very similar to the M5 then i'd have likely ticked that box, but at £30k more for fundamentally the same car i could never justify that.
I really can't see why you'd make the change if you already have an M5 as you'll surely go through a shirt removal process & thus the cost to change & let's be honest in it not being a big change would be huge. The M6GC is definitely the better looking car (i think) but technically it's the same & pretty much the same in every way other than the dress it's wearing.

I think the M6 is now MUCH better value with the LCI, as you get a lot more standard kit, full leather, m multi-seats, adaptive LED, yada yada, which when you add to the base M5 adds about £15k!
I personally think the GC is the much better looking car and feels a lot more special inside than the M5. Only reason I really ended going for the Pork is the Mrs was fed up after 5 M cars

I made the change about 4 m ago. I ran my M5 from early 2012 before all the big discounts so the price difference didn't feel that bad to me, in fact my M6GCP cost less than what I paid for the M5 at the time!
Can't say I've noticed anything different mechanically and my M6 doesn't have any of the power upgrade options but there is no doubt the M6 has a far plusher interior and to me when ever I walk up to it, particularly from the front its sharper front profile just looks the dogs @#@#. It also gets a lot more looks and comments than I ever got in the M5 if you have a shallow inner self like me and that sort of thing is important to you. Also of course I've seen plenty of F10 M5s about but have never seen another M6 GCP, I think there were only about 150 registered in the UK last time I looked.
Another point is that for sure it costs more but I think some of the kit on the M6 that is the basic spec are cost options on the M5 like the 20 inch rims and adaptive LED headlights etc.. Or at least they used to be extra cost options when I was specing up my M5. The rear space is obviously compromised compared to the M5 but the GCP has better rear room than the 2 door coupe and I've had 3 in the back on many journeys without to much of an issue if the middle rear passenger is a child. Ultimately that extra cost translates into making you feel just that extra bit special when your driving it IMHO.
I did consider another M5 with all the bells and whistles attached such as a B&O sound system and rear entertainment etc..but I just thought the deal on the M6 was so good that I couldn't say no. No doubt in 3 yrs time when the M6 finance ends I will be gearing up to the next generation M5 again but for now I couldn't be happier.
Just remember if you take out a new M6 on the 0% finance deal with a minimal deposit the crushing depreciation is such that you really have to stick it out for the full term as you are likely to be in severe negative equity on the car for the first couple of years if you decided to trade it back earlier.
Just my own personal thoughts, obviously they are both great cars.

I'm in the same predicament in 5 months time. There is a 3 year BMW subsidised lease deal on the M6 (not a 2 year unfortunately). I do 20K miles a year and the M5 costs me just under £900 inc VAT on a 2 year and the M6 in standard clothes would cost £1200 inc VAT on the subsidised 3 year .. on an unsubsidised 2 year it would cost almost £2K inc VAT. Considering a complete change and buying a Gen 2 997 Turbo S around 2012
Interesting that M6GC puts the power down better, any ideas why? Does it handle or steer any differently?

I would love an RS6 for the AWD, looks and interior. Having yet to drive one I wonder if the handling and weight spoils the drive a little?mondie said:

Lower centre of gravity, better bushing stronger A/R bars better suspension. After the LCI M5 the step up is to me anyway noticeable, putting power down and cornering in particular.
