Sub 10k E46 M3's?
Discussion
It depends... there are quite a few good ones around below £10k and generally fairly easy to weed out from the ad alone so:
Check boot floor/subframe has been checked/repaired
Full history
Evidence of being cherished
No modifications
Ideally less than 100k
Manual
If you then delve into these and speak to owners and have a look, there will be a few good ones...

I bought an £8,500 M3 one year ago, no service history, broke every rule in the book, but it's been 100% reliable!
I'm as happy as a pig in blahblahblah.
It's such a great car, handles like a dream, can transport 4 adults in comfort. Hit the sport button, ramp up the gear response rating and floor it, just the best noise in the world. It's as fast as a 911, just love it! I actually turned up to buy a 911, but drove both and preferred the driving position of the M3, plus it has a proper sized boot and is more reliable than a 996.

I sold mine last year for 6K.
108K miles
Subframe replaced
Full arrive history etc.
It did however need new tyres very soon and an inspection 2 service within a month or so.
Put it up for sale on m3 cutters.. Was sold within 2 days. In hindsight... I must have sold it too cheap! And the market seems to have firmed up recently.
It was a great car and still going strong....
Nothing wrong with sub 10K m3s... Bargains around.

I've owned mine for just under four years now. Bought it for £7800 on 126000 miles, BMW service history, 7 previous owners. I discontinued the bmwsh and have always taken it to Autokraft in Earlswood for anything it needs, the biggest job it has had done in my ownership is a new cooling fan as the old one seized. The subframe has also been checked and has been given the all clear.
It's now showing 140000 and is utterly reliable and still runs beautifully, never given me any problems apart from the aforementioned fan and the aircon not working despite a re-gas this Summer (no biggie for me really).
Some new Michelin Pilot Sports went on all round earlier in the year and made a world of difference to the way it behaves on the road (there were mainly mismatched cheapies on there before).
It's the longest I've ever kept a car, and can't see me selling it anytime soon tbh, it's too good!

Air con you probably have a seal issue so need them all changed them it should be working properly.
Or it could be corrosion on the condensing unit so switch out job done.
Note you should care about it if you regas it and then due to leaks you are venting air con gas to the atmosphere which if you simply vented it from the gas bottle you'd be prosecuted & fined.

Broke every rule in the book with mine too. Bought a manual cab for £7k from a dealer that specialises in them, was a CAT D too due to vandalism and no service history. First 9 months of ownership and not needed to spend a penny so far until this week when it went in for an inspection 2, cost £610 including brake fluid change.
Had a long chat with mechanic and it has an oil leak from the constant pressure valve and also power steering pump. Very minimal and a known fault with them but not a huge deal, quoted £400 to fix both. Next on the list is a driveshaft donut will need replacing soon as showing signs of wear and I’ll need to change the clutch soon (plus probably the DMF at the same time) but no rush.
On the positive side, compression is near perfect, sub frame has been repaired and reinforced, the springs are fine, and 50% wear on brakes. He gave the car is generally in good health. 8/10!
So to summaries, money will need to be spent but mainly on consumables and know faults. I don’t think that’s too bad considering so there are good cars out there that are cheap but it’s a gamble!

There is a charged one on ebay I'm keeping one eye on if my Impreza sells quickly enough.
I'm trying to be good with this one if I have one. Just keep it standard and we'll looked after. Maybe an exhaust in time and definitely LED tail lights if I find a good one without them.
