My understanding is that 'conti's' are the best all rounder tyre for the e46. Scanning over the various tyres that could be fitted are any almost as good or better? I am not including cheap jack tyres in my query, only tyres that would be sensible for normal road use only, not track use. Thank you.

Yes! Get some MPSS' on it, you won't regret it.

They don't last long though!

Most tyres are decent now.
there was a recent EVO tyre test that put Conti 6 at the top. I'm running the 2nd placed Advan 105s and am v happy.
I'm also keen to try the new Kumho PS91s.

Michelins have always been decent.

Loads of choice out there!

Thanks for replies, as you may know I am a newbi to the M leaving me with plenty to learn. At the moment my car is fitted with conti tyres, the fronts will need replacing in the Early Summer, the rears are still good for another 5k miles.

Driving style is 'old fart' although my son will no doubt give the car legal workout now and again. So looking for others experiences on differing tyres but I do expect to pay £160 -- £180 each corner.

Thanks again.

MPSS' are £200/each rear, fronts a little less.

Maybe you don't need such a good/expensive tyre if it's pootling along, but then why get the M3 in the first place! Even if you're going to only give it some stick sometimes, you'll be thankful for a good tyre.

I got 8k out of my last rears, but they get a little abuse.

Really? Our M135i left us on 22k miles, still on original MPSS all round, and all with 5mm+ remaining.

Cheers, I suppose I think that I drive moderately, the M appealed to me as a car that allows more control to speed.
I mean 70mph in a Morris minor feels like the devils work whilst in the M it's very moderate indeed.

I've said, 8k on the rears. I was told they were at 2mm when I changed them. I don't commute in it, so it's all fun driving over summer.

22k with most of the tread left is driving like a pensioner! Must try harder. hehe

Everyone likes to rave about the Super Sport (or the upcoming replacement) and its no doubt good, but i think the competition are catching up. I bought some Sport Contact 6's on the back of this review - http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/Michelin-Pilo...

I get the impression that they're as good as MPSS on the road and cost less. On a regularly tracked car maybe the MPSS is a better pick.

I was always under the impression that the Michelins lasted longer than the Contis.

Fitted MPSS to my M5 7k miles ago, no discernable wear so far. Recent checkup had them at 6-7mm all round, although it has to be said the car has been mainly used for motorway miles with one 30 min track session.

On the VXR8, the MPSS definitely are wearing better than the Contis that came stock. The MPS4S that are replacing the MPSS are supposed to be even better.

MPSSs are great tyres...looking forward to the new version though I don't expect there will be as much of a step in performance as the MPSSs were over the PS2.

I've just put some Michelin PS4's on the 125i and they have been an utter revelation - grippy, fairly quiet, infinitely more comfortable than the Potenza runflats I too off, and wet grip is superb.

Highly recommended.

I got 30k out of a set of MPSS on my old M5, they last very well in my experience as well.
