I need to buy a trolley Jack to raise my e46 off ground for maintenance work. Obviously it has to be low profile, having had a quick scan over the products I am unsure as to which I should buy. I don't want to spend £130 if I can buy a perfectly acceptable jack for £50. Advise please much appreciated, I am concerned the Jack needs to fit under the front access jacking area.

If it were me I'd get the 2.5T version. Yes it may be overkill but for a few more quid at least it should be safer to some extent.

I don't really want to jinx mine but my 3Tonner has outlived my 2 tonner (albeit it's a smaller jack) by quite a way and I know which one I trust more on the car in terms of stability etc.

Yes I had been thinking about that, the 1.25 ton jobbie would likely be OK but I think I will go for the heavier duty. Our lad will also use it to lift his cerbera.

Unless you are actually putting the jack in the centre of the car and lifting it I cannot see why you would need a 2.5T one. I can quite easily jack up a 1.5T car with a 0.5T jack.

However the higher potential lifting power the jack has, the more sturdy it is likely to be.

If longevity is your goal, I would suggest that rather than buying the 2.5T aluminium jack, looking for a 1 - 1.5T steel one. This is likely to wear much better, albeit be heavier and harder to manoeuvre.

If the 2.5 is anything like a friend's Clarke they are not too bad to lift around. They are not as a light as a feather but certainly light enough to move around, moreso than my 3 tonne item.

They are heavier to move around than a smallish 2T item but the car feels sturdy on them, especially if you are shaking things on the car (removing stubborn brake discs or fixings for example).

IIRC SGS make the jacks for a few people, including Clarke.

I probably use my 3T every month or two (4 cars at home, one of which is covering around 2,000 miles a month). I think I've had it for almost 10 years. The 2T does sometimes have its uses mind you, but as a secondary item and if used solely as one I'll generally use 2 axle stands.

I've used a Halfords 2ton trolley for years now with no issues. Drops low enough to go under a Z4M roadster jacking points and lifts a good way too.3 0 squid

The Costco one is an Arcan one - I got mine off eBay (brand new) as no Costco near me. Much much better than my SGS one.

My SGS one broke (due to fiddly, poorly designed part) and they couldn't give a stuff. I originally bought it to replace a cheap Halfords one that bent as it lifted (!). I bit the bullet and bought the Arcan one - much better in every way (well except weight - my tools are across the garden from my drive and carrying it down there is unpleasant!).

Having said that my Arcan one was over double the cost of the SGS one.

Probably no point, postage from Northern Ireland to England would kill any savings. But I'll certainly check it on Wednesday when we are back.

I have the Arcan 3T low jack, but it won't reach the centre jacking point between the front wheels (130i with the MSport bumper - not lowered).
If you plan to jack from that area then make sure the jack will reach AND fit under the bumper.
