Sorting out my e46

My recent purchase has proved to be a good car, thus far! Saying that I have only put about 300 miles on it since purchase.
Had the headlights aligned, engine oil and filter change +'boot floor/subframe inspection for peace of mind.
Some minor issues will be sorted after Christmas, these include
Replace oil pressure relief valve
Replace time chain tensioner 'O' ring
Replace diff input seal
Service 2 will be carried out later during Summer, I asked my local BMW indie the cost of this. He told me it includes the valve shim checks and the engine needs to be stone cold for this work (encouraging) and of course the other service items
£725 which I guess is likely there or thereabouts in the scheme of things.

one thing I always do is replace my oil & filter along with a new air filter every 5000 miles or so, if you keep an eye on euro car parts they offer discount on oils etc. (Castrol edge 10w-60) and I tend to buy 6 packs at a time along with filters and do it myself.

Castrol Edge 0w-60 is/was the only oil 'Approved by BMW for M engines'.
It would be absolutely catastrophic to use anything else...
...except BMW now have a deal with shell, so now Shell Helix Ultra Racing 10w-60 is BMWs approved oil.
It doesn't really matter either way. but if you go to the dealers you will be getting Helix.
The main advantage is Shell Helix Ultra Racing is noticeably cheaper than Castrol Edge (£21.99/l of edge vs £13.49/l for Helix from eurocarparts).

No, the correct castrol oil is 10W-60 as previously mentioned.It would be absolutely catastrophic to use anything else...

Thanks guys, yes wiggycerb I intend to replace engine oil and filter once year regardless. I will use Castrol edge oil.
I have noticed that the service schedule is a bit out of sync, it's had sever.al oil changes but missed its service 1. The car has had little use for the past four years and I guess the previous owner didn't want to spend the money on that. It has had a full geomentary service which is good news. Car runs like a dream, said it now!!!!!
The car has been residing at my next door but one neighbours driveway, under the car port. She comes home from holiday so had to shift it. Relegated my Volvo 123gt from the garage to m drive making room for the BMW. Just ordered a outdoor breathable car cover to fit the Volvo.. my wallet has become noticeably much thinner these last couple of months .

ECP are not always the cheapest for oil..
Try Opie oils (they also have an ebay store) where i bought my last lot from.

I paid £58 for 6L Via their ebay store, and got free delivery.
ECP are good at offering 30% discount but the prices are already inflated somewhat.

No dont shut up, its all very useful info, (we knew what you meant was clearly a typo) always good to pass links for parts around this is whats good about forums like this.
Shell is def cheaper and suspect this was why BMW shifted its whole parts supply of oil their way and not Castrols.
I'm a bit of a brand snob i think... i use Castrol classic 20w 50 in my Jag, but maybe its time to change with cost savings to be had.
I think i still use the Castrol in 'M car' as it was always for 15+ years the oil of choice, it has crept up in price of late though.

Buying the shell oil over Castrol is irresistible for me.

A massive saving over Castrol cost. I have always gone for the best oil recommended for particular engines, it seems to me a no brainier to buy shell now. Not connected to any of these businesses mentioned.

Shell was (not sure if still is) the recommended oil used by Ferrari.
I'm a little loyal to Castrol for my M car, as its what its always had, i'm sure its no better than Shell mind.

I stick to Castrols 10w60. Its an oil whose only bulk user was BMW and the recent reformulation and name change from TWS to Edge was likely made with M engines in mind and to maintain its M approval.
Shells Helix 10W60 is instead approved for Ferrari and likely formulated to achieve that approval.
The few quid difference is incidental.

As a newbi I'm learning, and having read your comments above decided to dig deeper. As I'm sure you know already, BMW switched allegiance to Shell oils for MOST of their new cars from 2015. What I read earlier hadn't used the word MOST. Seems that the 'M' engines are not included in the switch. Best I stick to he good advise and use Castrol.
