I M desperately searching to no avail for the thread discussing the appropriate wheel size/ fitment that can be used as a spare for the e46 M3.
I recall reading the thread some weeks back but despite my best efforts it remains elusive to me. Can some kind soul provide a link please. It may have been a thread in the cutters forum? Thanks for any help offered.

If I recall correctly the wheel was from the BMW330i. But not sure.

I believe the combination is the 17 inch E46 spare wheel (fits almost all versions), P/N 36 11 6 750 007 with a 135/80 17 tyre.

^^^^^^
Thank you for info, my car is fitted with the 19" option wheels so would the wheel tyre you mention still be OK. I am concerned about all the speed sensors that control electronics being OK with odd size wheels, albeit in emergency use only.

I have now also found the original thread on the subject.

Standard 19 inch rim tyre size is

Front 225/40 19, circumference 2081.6mm
Rear 255/35 19, circumference 2076.9mm

The space saver, 135/80 17 has a circumference of 2035.1mm which will give about 2% speedo error. Given the speed you'll be driving with the space saver, it won't be an issue.

A 145/80 17 would be fractionally better (2085.4mm) but I don't think anyone makes that size. You could also go for a 135/85 17 (2119.9mm) but the speedo error is about the same in the other direction and you'll have a slightly larger spare to stash.

Thank you, great stuff.. However I bought a wheel via eBay, the seller insists that it will be ok with the e46 M3. It is a 17" wheel fitted with a 125/80/17 tyre.
I now need to sort out a side jack, I do have an old sisscor jack in the garage I will try that with the car on my drive before spending more cash!

A 125/80 17 tyre will have a circumference of 1984.9mm.That should still be fine, but it's starting to get marginal, just slightly more error than the 135, about 4%.

Thanks Richard, a bit of reassurance goes a long way.
