As it says really. Has anyone ever put E46 running gear into an E46 Touring body? Is it viable?

Why didn't BMW make one? Alpina I'd imagine made something.

Would make a great dogwagon.

Yes, Someone has built an E46 M3 Touring, there was an article on it in Total BMW. Was a bit of a nightmare i believe.

I think the E46 touring is begging for the E39 M5 engine. It would be much more suitable as a serious car. That Torque would make load lugging a breeze and if the way an E39 goes is anything to go by the Touring would fly. Fit shouldn't be a problem as they dropped the v8 into the GTR race car. Would be so nice to have that badge on the back 350..........

I (or more specifically, myself and some colleagues) have:

It's not difficult, if you keep it simple. Just expensive!

I think that is my perfect car (given a manual 'box).

I remember seeing that down at Kustom Kolors when it was being painted

Sadly BMW thought there wasn't the market for a touring M3 as historically the e34 M5 touring didn't sell well. Shame as the RS4 Avant did brilliantly... For what it's worth, much as I love the S54 I'm not convinced it is the right engine for a touring though - it's a real screamer and suits the 2 door... and as another has pointed put above, a torquey V8 from the E39 M5 would be amazing...

That's the one! It's the only place I knew of in the area that would have a go at getting the arches right. Luckily they did!

I think the screaming S54 is a huge part of the attraction with the E46 M3 though. The E39 M5 lump would just make the car feel a bit too easy to go fast in.

I'd use the car for nursery runs and commuting and for the commuting bit (on empty B-roads) I definitely want a screamer. smile

I'd love one.
Best of both worlds - just wish that I was mechanically minded enough to do it. Would feel a bit upset at tearing my m3 to pieces though.
