I own a 22 year old MX5 that has no rollover protection (bar the screen).

Obviously most TVR's have no rollover protection, as have alot of other convertibles of that era.
How have do owners of cars not equipped with rollover protection feel about it?
Im tempted to buy a TR lane/Harddog rollbar which should stop my head meeting tarmac!

However, two things concern me, one is the rise in insurance costs, and the second is a rear end crash (more likely to happen?). Do you need a helmet with a bar?
Thoughts please
Matt

Have many MX-5s been rolled?

I wouldn't have though so either.

I will be fitting one.. But have never felt it NEEDS one.

Also, in that picture with the black MX5 I honestly don't think that bar was on there when it crashed. The bar hasn't even got any scratches or anything.

But, TR Lane will be getting some of my hard earned soon. Also, if you're with certain insurers they see a Roll Bar as a safety item and doesn't cost any extra.

I did fit one to my MGB, but that was my first car and I knew I was a terrible driver. I'm not sure whether I'd bother again, it would probably depend on the cost.

Be wary of cheap ones, they may be no use at all.

Except the scuffs on the top Jonny hehe
why wouldn't people fit one (to buy and have it fitted works out at about £350)

My E30 cab doesn't have roll over protection. Tbh, driving a 26 year old car, I'm of the opinion that any crash at speed is going to be bad news. I try not to think about it and try not to crash!

The problem is, you don't have to be going very fast to roll a car - you just have to be unlucky. A blown tyre on a 30mph bend like a roundabout can easily lead to a roll if you hit a raised kerb at the wrong angle. Some cars will even roll from control input on flat tarmac, although I'd imagine that's quite unlikely in something as low as an E30 or MX5.

I can't see any tongue out

But, I have seen that video of the NA in USA which rolls 5 times and the roll bar is still holding strong. I don't reckon the A pillar would hold up at all, imo.

For a TVR owner it's the last of their worries, getting the thing working is the first, then making sure it doesn't catch fire, or go sideways into a tree...on fire.

If they do get up to a speed where flipping over is a possibility, something else major usually happens first, like catastrophic engine failure...(oh, and fire). HTH wink

I've put rollbars in both my MX5s, bar-head clearance can be a potential issue with some bars for tall people but other bars are better, and bucket seats stop it being an issue too.

They make a very significant improvement to chassis rigidity though, MX5s feel much tighter and nicer to driver with one.

Why in the hell would someone go to the trouble of fitting a rollbar to a crashed and written off MX5/Miata?

Also look at the top of the rollbar, the sickers are all ripped up. It was definitely fitted prior to it being rolled.
