Just wondering really how much it would cost if you bought a shed of a 5 and paid for it to be brought back to a high standard.

E.G Sills and arches cut out and replaced - ££??
Full respray - ££??
New springs, dampers, ARBs and bushes - ££??

What else would you do to a shed? New roof and seals perhaps. Maybe new seats.

This is a long term plan for me.

Speak to Garath, the mx5restorer on mx5nutz.

He can give you a good idea and his work is the stuff of legend.

I'm not sure.

If were talking 'full refurb' which I think he is, then I'd expect that to include -

Everything stripped, treated, painted, new bushes, new bolts, full set of quality dampers, lots and lots of labour, alignment session etc etc...

I bet theres half again at least, of your budget really.

Just got some Zeta-s coilovers fitted & alignment done, £700. Bushes would be faily labour intensive but I reckon you could get it all done for a grand if you waved some notes about

BTW, thought about this myself, gave up on the idea and found a mint low milage 1.8 NA for £1500 and did the suspension. With the ££ I made breaking the old car it was just not worth fixing it up.

unless you're long term bored, there's no point. enough decent cars out there that you can buy one where *everything* doesn't need to be replaced!!

i don't mind a bit of work, and have done a fair bit on mine, but i probably wouldn't bother with a car that needed welding and painting

If you have some sentimental attachment to the car and you want to keep it forever then maybe. Otherwise don't bother, you'll never get your money back.

I'm not planning on being the next Mike Brewer...

It would be a forever fun car and something to keep me interested long term.

It's no different to what I've done on my car. No I haven't restored a banger to concourse condition but I've still spent way more money on my car that I will ever see back for it, in fact looking at it that way I will have lost way more money on mine than you will ever lose restoring a Mk1, even if you do all the mods I have on mine now. I don't intend to sell my car so it's not an issue for me.

I wish I could find the link but Mazda (Japan) were taking MK1's, refurbishing them to factory standard and uprating a few parts like the suspension.

I think they were also adding a turbo.
