Mazda RX8 Insurance - 21 yr old
Discussion
I've been trawling eBay and can't believe the amount of car that can be bought for peanuts! So many cheap rx8s for sale.
Do any younger drivers on here have an rx8? By this I mean on your own insurance.. Not on your parents insurance as I wont be doing that.
Any reccommendations on insurance companies to try?
Thinking of having a ring around later, if I can insure one (reasonably) I'll probably buy one. I've had a couple of much faster cars but they were on kit car policies...expecting the rx8 to be astronomical tbh ..

That's because RX8s aren't really great cars. They are expensive to repair, very thirsty and have particular maintenance needs. They are ok if you know exactly what you are getting but I certainly wouldn't advise anyone to get a cheap one as they are cheap for a reason.
I expect I'm going to get flamed for that one

Sorry, couldn't resist
Anyway, when a car seems to be a lot of car for the money there is usually a good reason for it. Getting a max of 25mpg on a careful run is only one of the reasons when it comes to the RX8. Having to be very careful with maintenance is another. Unless you are a very competent mechanic I'd say specialist servicing is essential or it could end up repaying you with very big bills. Even if you are a competent mechanic there is a lot to learn when it comes to rotary engines. You can't just keep the oil, coolant & fuel topped up and rag it to death. They aren't ideal as stripped out track cars for this very reason. For that purpose you are in the right section as an MX5 is a much much better track car.

Have to disagree a bit with the above. They don't need specialist servicing - they need specialist attention if something goes wrong with them, but scheduled maintenance is simple. After all, it isn't as if they need valve clearances checking or timing belts changing...

If you can get one with a good set of compression figures or buy a dead one cheap and have it rebuilt and then keep on top of the coils (undetected coil failure seems to be the engine killer with these cars) I don't see why it wouldn't strip out to make a great track car. Great handling and brakes and a lot quicker than a standard MX-5. I suspect that they will be more reliable used as a track car than as a commuter hack, too.

I completely agree, and I even work for Mazda I expect I'm going to get flamed for that one

We get plenty of the "I only paid £3k for it.." and then they have to replace atleast a grands worth of stuff.
Aside from being a passenger in one, I have no experience of RX8's. However, going by what I've read, they strike me as offering little return, for what would appear to be a relatively expensive car to keep on the road.
I guess that's more of an observation than an informed opinion...

t. I thought you were saying you were confused because I'd not considered an mx5.
