Hi

As I mentioned in the bootlid thread I'm considering breaking up my car. My question is, are there any body panel differences between a Mk2 and a MK2.5. I've seen people on ebay listing bootlids for 2001-2005 (which would be MK2.5).

My cars a 1999, obviously any panels which only fit a pre 2001 is likely to be worth less, than anything which goes on a MK2.5.

Also does anyone know if the hood is the same? This one is a vinyl one, with glass rear window.

Many thanks

Rob

Hood will fit either, or also a Mk1. Mk2 hood with a glass window will be desirable mod for Mk1 owners, its what I did. Sell it with the frame and hood as whole (the Mk2 frame is better designed).

Rest of panels - I'm pretty sure that only the headlights and Bumper are different on the Mk2.5, maybe rear bumper too. I'd get someone else to double check that though.

Its possible not until you have them parked next to each other that you spot how similar all 3 are - it really is aesthetic differences, the skeleton of the car on the whole is the same from 89 on.

Lots and lots of the bits off the Mk2 can be snapped up by Mk1 owners as it nearly all fits, Mk2 VIC Cylinder head and/or complete engine is a nice swap for someone.

Thanks for the reply

I have to say the hood design on that car is really good, Far far superior to the Z3 which I owned some years ago.

This car has just had a brand new hood fitted. I've rebuilt the engine too, its a 1.8 and is totally mint. They are not cheap to rebuild either.

If the panels fit a MK2.5 then thats good news.

The bottom really seems to have dropped out of the market for them. Its been up for sale for a month now with no response at all, and really the asking price is quite reasonable. As sell it for nothing I'd rather break it up, to be honest.

As above, I believe the only difference between Mk2 & Mk2.5 body is front bumper & headlights.

Where is your car advertised?

MX5Lazza thanks for your reply. At least if the cars got some value for spares it gives me a viable plan B.

Its in autotrader, ebay classifieds and also carandclassic.co.uk. I did consider putting it on here but was advised PH works best for more unusual vehicles than a humble, factory spec MX? I can post a link if thats allowed under forum rules.

Admittedly ebay and carandclassic are relatively untried sales methods, but autotrader has never failed me in the past, so I can only think there is just no demand and/or I'm too dear, It was 2500 but its dropped to 2100 now. I've spoken to a couple of people who dabble in the trade a little and been told car sales generally are very slow right now. Bummer!

Wouldn't mind but I spent ages doing a proper job on the engine, block chemically cleaned and painted, bead blasted rocker box etc.

I'd keep the car but I simply can't justify the overheads of running it.

Once again, thanks for your reply :-)

Well looking at the AT ad it looks fine to me. I wouldn't mention the engine rebuild though as I think that would put some people off thinking that it means the engine might have problems. Just include the receipts in the sale and tell them about it if they ask.

I guess other than that the price looks fine so it could just be that there are so many for sale at the moment it gets lost amongst all the other.

Does it cost to put an ad on PH?

Also try an ad on Nutz and MX5 OC forums.

If you joined Pistonheads sufficiently long ago you get a free premium advert. I'm almost certain you would Robgee so I would just get it on Pistonheads too.

Thanks once again for replying, I really appreciate the friendly advice.

I was in two minds whether to mention the rebuild, on the one hand as you say it might put some people off. But on the other hand, on a 12 year old car having a nicely freshened up engine might be a plus to others? Especially as some of those early Mk2 1.8's are known to have problems with oil consumption (thats why it was done in the first place).

There are quite a few for sale around that price though, I might ring a few up and see if they have sold or not.

I'll certainly give it a go on PH, as well as those other websites you mentioned.

Just tried PH and it didn't offer the free option, will give it a go once the ebay and autotrader ads have expired
