Put my Mk2.5 on a weigh-bridge and was surprised to see 1250Kg. That's an industrial weigh-bridge so probably not calibrated for lighter weights and the car had all my day-to-day cr@p in it and on a car with all the extra Sport braces, supercharger, roll bars etc. and 1/2 tank of fuel. Probably about right really.

That's a surprise Laz!
I'd assumed my Mk2.5 (non-AC) would be around 1100-1150kgs.

My 10AE without AC says it is 1245kg on the sticker at the front. Quite a bit more than the offical weight for earlier Mk 2 cars.

Weighed my mk3.5 sport tech and it was 1126kg which isn't far off the 1095kg figure quoted on parkers guide.

My Mk2 RS with aircon, TR Lane roll bar and 3/4 tank of juice came in at 1040kg I think it was. My friends DC2 was 20kg heavier I do remember that.

If I ever feel that the 5 is feeling heavy or the steering not as pinpoint as I remember it being the first time I drove it, I just go for a drive in the Golf. It puts things in perspective and I fall in love with the 5 all over again. smile

Sounds spot on... My 1.8is came in at 1056kgs at Cadwell.
3/4 of a tank, and some tools in the boot.

Now I'm surprised. I was under the impression that a standard mk1 weighs 950kg

A basic spec early 1.6 is around that I think.

Shame everyone is always advised to go for a JDM car with a higher spec i.e. leccy windows & mirrors, air-con, strut brace, leather etc and then adds rear tower brace and front & rear chassis braces. In that condition even an early car will be plenty over 1000Kg.

Thats exasctly why i bought my 5. Its a Uk 1.8 in boggo spec. No leccy windows, air con, power steering, leccy wing mirrors, leather, boot release etc etc. All its got over the early 1.6 is the extra bracing which I believe is needed as the "5" is exactly what you would call rigid!

I like her basic because though shes missing an LSD (thats the only thing i wish it had) she has more power than the 1.6 imports, shes more rigid and lighter than 90% of them.

personally i'd rather live with the weight of p/s than go without, can't see it weighing more than a couple kgs. the same goes for braces, they aren't exactly heavy, maybe a kilo each?

however, i am glad i don't have stuff like leccy mirrors or air con.

i'd like to think mine still comes in under 1000kgs although in reality, i'm not going to notice the difference betwen 995 and 1005, but it just makes me happier in my head for some reason! smile
