Rust Work - Repair Cost?
Discussion
Hi All
On my quest for 2 Seater enjoyment I have found a lovely example of an MX5 MK1, going for what would normally be seen as a fair price, except for when I recieved the pictures of the Rust damage...

Being a bit of a newb in this area what's a repair cost likely to set me back on this? Any advice would be great
Ben

No, I wouldn't describe it as cheap (for the age etc) - its at £950, the guy apparently has reduced it from £1200 as he wasn't getting any interest... He's clearly not going to get the work done before selling it to me or give it to me for £500 quid less, I feel he could find himself in a catch 22 situation here...
The sills are apparently fine.
By the look of the pictures that is both sides yes, I was very surprised when the pics came through!

I VERY much doubt if the sills or body members generally are ok.
It would be most unusual to see extensive corrosion (which this is) on two sides and nothing on the rest of the car. MOST unusual.
Furthermore the sills are generally not good on the older MX5's.
I would be very careful: all that glitters... This needs serious checking out.

He's been very clever with the pics in the ad. If you went to see the car without seeing the pics he sent, you wouldn't belive it was the same car.

for 950 quid that looks dreadful! Has it done ridiculous low mileage or something and thinks he can up the value on the engine?
I just picked up mine for 1200 quid and the sills and arches are more or less perfect.
see here http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
mine has done fairly high milage at just under 120 k but the engine is rattle free and gear box feels tight like a tiger.

I drive past a blue Mk1 that is for sale every day. I stopped to take a look once and there is rust in both sills and rear arches and it otherwise looks a little tatty. I asked the price - £3800!!!
I did tell him that was way too high and he said he'd recently brought it down from £4500 due to lack of interest
I told him that in that condition I wouldn't pay £500 for it and he thought I was just trying to negotiate a better price. When I walked away without making him an offer he looked properly offended! It's still for sale - must have been for sale 9 months now!
My guess is that he paid a silly price for it and really does believe it might be worth decent money.
That one looked no better than the one in this thread.

I'm tempted to offer him 500 for it, but I know what would happen, id end up offending the chap, who in all fairness - seems like a nice bloke - just unprepared for the real price of his car.
The "i've reduced the price already" argument is pretty useless - he could have had it up at 50,000 and reduced it by 49,000 to get it to sell - its means diddly squat if it was overpriced to begin with...

"What sets this great looking sporty car apart from other MX5s is the large alloy wheels"
In that ad I just read useless stuff such as :
White Lockwood dials in mph, Large 17inch alloys, Sony cd/radio, Air con (needs attention)
Instead of spending proper money where it's clearly needed ie the rotten bodywork.
I bet all the aircon needs is a 're-gas' too...
Steer well clear IMO.
