Right, going to book my mk1 Eunos Roadster in for a service. I'll get some Mobil 1 10w40 for it, but I figure I might as well get them to change the gearbox and dif oil too. What would you guys recommend?

Also, if my mate who works at Andrew Page can't get me it cheaper, is this - http://www.camskill.co.uk/m1b8s4389p58384/_MOBIL_1... - about as cheap as I'll find the oil?

When I got my car, the gearbox seemed rather notchy, and on the advice of a local gearbox builder I drained and refilled it with Dextron II ATF. The gearchange was much slicker afterwards.

Initially I was a bit worried but as he pointed out, it works with autogearboxes mated with huge V8's. Rover's R380 boxes use ATF also.

but the job of an ATF is completely different to an MTF...?

I use Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90 Fully Synthetic MTF available from Halfords and Opie Oils. Not cheap but improved the shift on my 6 speed.

Snap! Although that just happens to be what my garage uses as default for 75w-90. Apparently it's the oil of choice for "picky" Subaru gearboxes for some reason.

I used Redline Synthetics. I can't remember exactly but something like MT90 in the gearbox and 75W-90 in the dif (or might be the other way around).

Well, it has to do more things than in a manual, there are hydraulics to operate. But your average auto still has lots of gearteeth to lube in its epicyclic gear train.

A lot of the Getrags that BMW fit are filled with ATF, and many Ford gearboxes also. I did try synthetic gear oil and I still thought it was still less than wonderful.
