Had my Eunos up on the ramps today to fix a sticky caliper and it looks like I'll need some new pads soon.

What brake pads do people recommend on here, and is it worth spending extra just for normal/quick road driving?

People find it hard to fault the OEM Mazda Pads for road driving.

I've just ordered a set myself, Auto Link have them at a good price. 10% discount for MX5 Nutz too.

Yep, Mazda pads. Not much dust from them either.

Who makes the OE Mazda pads?

I've just replaced some front Sumitomo pads with some EBC Ultimax.

Same performance but slightly more dust I reckon. Got them for £20.53 delivered from Brakes4U. Had to re-use the shims and clips.

I was not impressed at all with Ultimax. YMMV...

Also got Ultimax pads all round on the Galaxy, as well as EBC discs. Can't really tell the difference from the OE Ford originals TBH - other than (again) slightly more dust.

I'm not hard on brakes at all so that's probably why I guess.

What was your issue with them?

I used greenstuff when I had my Mk1.

Fine for road use and could stand it on it's nose on a track day.

Well worth fitting some braided hoses and uprated fluid if you fancy going on track.

It all depends how you drive; there's no point blowing a shed load on performance pads if you don't push the car much.

I personally drive my '5 as Mazda intended and I have Axxis Ultimate pads fitted F&R. I've previously run Ferodo DS2500's (the BEST road pads money can buy...) and EBC Yellow's on other cars and both are good.

So far I'm very impressed with the Axis's and have only come close to cooking them once (even then they had more to give, but I backed off). I picked up the full set for less than £100 (a front set of DS2500's cost circa £120!!), I think this place sells them: http://www.5-speed.co.uk/

If you don't give your brakes much stick then just stick to OEM or quality aftermarket.

The XP8's are pretty much a full on race pad though, aren't they? Not cheap either.

Even giving the brakes plenty of stick, trackday use etc OEM pads are fine with standard power and road tyres.

I'll second that. I've done two trackdays with a standard 1.8 and had no problems.

Thanks for the replys smile

Didn't realise brake pads could be so expensive!!! even the Mazda pads seem to be £50 for a pair! Probabley just my fault for always buying whatever the local shop had!

Depending on what model you have, Mintex pads are quite cheap.

If you into driving fast on country B roads then my choice would be Mintex 1144s - Get them from Camskill. So progressive with plenty initial bite

Fast b-roads do not need track pads. Track pads are made to stand the heat of repeated hard braking from high speeds. It's just not possible to drive that hard on the road (however hard you think you're driving on the road it's not that hard). Mazda pads will be just as good as anything else on the road.
