i have come to the conclusion that my valve stem seals are shot,iv'e got to the point that if i fill it with oil to the high level on the dip stick it will flood oil into the cylinders and choke it and run like a pig but oddly enough no smoke out of the back, but if i fill it to the lowest level on the dipstick theres no running issues but does smoke badly on cold starts but only for about 30sec.

Its now becoming a cycle of filling it to the low level marker ,burning the oil on cold starts ,and putting 1/2 ltr in every 200 miles back to the low level marker again

if it is the valve stem seals then how much would a garage charge to replace them
i could do the job myself but time is a bit limited and it would have to be a worthwhile DIY effort.
i am in the Heysham/Morecambe area if anyone has any recomended garages

It can be done without lifting the head but is a tricky operation. Normally you would expect to remove and strip the head to replace then so it could cost anywhere from £300 upwards.

Try the rope trick, what have you got to lose? if it goes pear shaped then the head will need to come off as it would with the normal method.
