I want desperately to buy an MX5 MK1. My budget is small, tops out around 1.5k. Been looking for a while and I would love to get a black 1.6 with nardi steering wheel and tan leather seats in good condition with no rust. Don't mind dings here and there, likely in my area it will get keyed anyway
frown.

The ones i've seen have been going for about 1.8k. I want if possible to get it for a good price cause i know in my area i'll need a hardtop otherwise my hood will likely get slashed. Carazy idea but what about buying one in good nick, then buying leather seats and installing them afterwards. Is this just gonna be crazy expensive? Saw seats for under 200, how much is installation? Any ball park estimates would be great!

Also any other tips much appreciated.

Cheers.

Do it yourself.. It's 4 bolts per seat, thats it.

About 10 minutes to do per side smile

There should be plenty about with leather in your price range, but if you do get one with cloth replacing the seats is not something you need to pay someone to do. They're only held in by 5 bolts, undo those, disconnect the electrical connections at the bottom (for the headrest speakers, if the seats have them) and they come out. Refitting is the reverse or removal.

Don't forget the bolt attaching the seat belt clip to the tunnel...

Great news! Thanks everyone. Does it make any difference to insurance? Is this the kind of thing I need to inform them about?

You will easily find one within your budget. On friday I picked up a black V-Spec, tan leather interior, not a drop of rust for £400 with a years MOT. Have a look on Gumtree.com, thats where I found mine and prices are massively different to PH / Autotrader.

Yea I know - not a spot of rust. Only bad points were that it was filthy and electric windows don't work, but converting to manual anyway.

Cleaned up quite nicely though, only annoying thing is the speedo was in KM and i think has just got a new fascia so its wildly optimistic at times.
