Im about to renew my insurance and Im looking for a classic policy for a 1998 NB. The car is unmodified, with an OEM hard top.

Im looking for agreed value, limited mileage, no use of NCB, retained salvage and windscreen cover and I expect to not receive driving other cars cover.

Any suggestions appreciated.

You could try the obvious places, such as A-Plan, Sky and Adrian Flux, or even a price comparison website. I've just insured my mk2 with REIS on limited mileage, and I can't even use it to commute to work - might be worth giving them a try for the limitations you require.

I spoke to Mary at Richard Eggar yesterday. Not a particularly bad price, but it isnt a classic policy and a couple of the features I needed werent available.

Try Footman James, which is the chosen insurer for the OC. They do agreed valuations and limited mileage on their classic car policy. Their number is 0843 357 1029.

Thank you. FJ is on my list, but they seem to far from competitive on the OC forum.

I think that REIS would be best if the car had been modified, but as with most other brokers, they dont regard the MX-5 as a classic.

They insure my '97 NA and are good to deal with.

I'll add Hagerty to my list, thank you. I hadnt considered them before, as theyre quite strict on what theyll cover as a classic. Good for Porsches, but not for MX-5s, Id thought...

I have my NB with Classicline. Pretty flexible when it comes to mileage, mods (if you plan to have any) and usage, and UK breakdown included.

Added to the list. Is it a classic policy?

Just out of interest... why does it have to be a classic policy?
A few years back I had a classic policy on mine but when I came to renewal I found that standard insurance was only about £20 more and a hell of a lot more flexible when it came to mileage, parking, staying away from home, driving to work etc.

Partly habit, I'll admit. When Im about to commit a great amount of time and effort to a car its reassuring to know that in the event of a claim I will be able to keep it.

Im aware at the moment, of someone who is making a claim for a superb Porsche 944S2. They have a PCGB valuation but not a classic policy with agreed value as its a daily driver. The car has been restored and its probably the cleanest straightest S2 anywhere. Even if he receives his valuation figure, which isnt likely, he will still lose the car and have to start again - would you want that?

The car will only ever be worth about £3,000, but if someone crashes into me at the traffic lights, lightly damaging the car, but damaging it sufficiently for the insurers to write it off, then I dont want to lose the car, because £3,000 wont ever make up for the work that I have put in to it.

Useful if you maintain multiple cars but don't have multiple NCBs. Many of the classic insurers also offer fleet policies which can be cost-effective.
