Hi Guys,

We recently bought an MX5 MK3.5 as a family, have had a few blasts in it and its great fun. One problem I've noticed though is that when slowing down in gear you can hear a scratching / grinding / whining noise. This is also the case when driving slowly in first or 2nd gear.

We've taken it to our local mazda garage and also our local garage and neither could find what it could be??? It doesn't sound healthy and the mazda garage seems to think its a characteristic..... it definitely is not as it sounds terrible, my cousin thought the car was breaking down when i took him for a spin the other day.

Any ideas??

Sounds like the LSD to me - it's normal.

It's why I like mine - it doesn't have a LSD. smile

LSD shouldn't make any noise at all.

My lsd is as quiet as a mouse. Hey hang on, maybe that's it. You have a mouse scratching its arse in your transmission tunnel.

Mine has a bit of a grindy, whirry noise in first and second when off the throttle, when the gearbox oil is hot. I'm not particularly worried, at the moment anyway, as I've still got three years warranty left, less a couple of weeks. biggrin The car is still as tight as a Duck's proverbial as well, so it might go away.

It's a six speed with LSD BTW.

Yeah we have the sport-tech coupe.. It is really quite loud to be honest and happens whether heated or not. Though you don't really notice it untless you're slowing down. Other than that the car is spot on but it is an annoyance! You can't hear it outside the car the noise is inflated really in the cabin itself which is odd also!

Mine doesn't make that noise, but then it is the poverty model sans LSD.

I wouldn't describe it as scratchy exactly but there is definitely a noise from the rear diff area of mine (more so with the roof up than down). Can't figure out quite how to describe it, but it's kind of high pitched soft echo-ey scrape-y hehe

From reading the forums it's a case of 'they all do that sir'. To clarify - I'm talking 3.5 Sport Tech Coupe.

Hi

I also have the same problem, but found answers here:

and

Seems it's supposed to be like this although there is a mod to reduce the noise if you really can't live with it. At least it's not an issue.
