Returning to another MX5
Discussion
So, a few years ago I had an MX5. Got "bored", got rid, and have subsequently had 3 other cars, and now I am back at a '5 again.
Normally I would not be one to get the same car twice, but I can't think of many cars that tick as many boxes for so little money, and I can't think of any cars that are as fun for so little money.
This one is a complete opposite in terms of spec to my original one; the original being an RS-Limited. I won't need to explain that to anyone on this forum, but suffice to say, the spec on my current one, a UK spec model is a lot more basic!
No electric mirrors, windows. In fact, I can't even appear to spot anything to adjust the mirrors with, internally, it seems that you have to adjust the physical mirror casing itself. There's no air con, no ABS. I assume there is no torsen either.
Yet, I can say now that realistically, it is still just as much fun as my last one. There's something quite refreshing about getting into a car with zero spec, and virtually nothing to go wrong. No excess weight being carried, no driver aids to get you out of the crap. Just you, a couple of seats, steering wheel, pedals, gearstick, 4 wheels, an engine and a body.
It even seems to sound nicer than my old one - despite seemingly being standard. It seems you can make a car sound louder easily enough, but as for sounding nicer? Its loud enough anyway... my opinion may change, but there you go.
My last car I briefly went back to FWD, and almost straight away regretted it. I just feel FWD is just so one-dimensional in comparison. RWD keeps you on your toes a little more, and gives you more options, and just plain feels better. I can't see me going back to FWD. It'd have to be a very special car to do that - at least in the same ballpark as a DC2 anyway and even then its missing that certain something.
Anyway, its good to be back into an MX5. I realised that nothing you can buy for this price will deliver as much all round fun, cheap running costs, and reliability. Its a stop gap for a year or two but what a stop gap it is!
