I know this must have been covered before, but I’ve searched high and low on here and Nutz and not found an answer, except for it doesn’t seem to matter what goes on the rears.

So, my Mk1 1.8s brakes need doing, and I plan on doing it properly since track days are on the agenda this year, Axxis Ultimate pads, S/S hoses, Motul RBF600 fluid.

Looking at MX5 parts you can get genuine Mazda discs for around £90 for fronts. They also sell ‘budget’ discs for £45, and Autolink sell a pattern part for similar. Do the Mazda branded ones really make that much of a difference?

If the genuine Mazdas really do make a huge difference then that is what I will be going for, but I don’t really want to pay twice the price so the box has a Mazda label.

I paid £180 for new brakes and discs all round at Freelance Mazda. I presume at that price they were not OEM but they felt perfectly strong on spirited road drives.

the budget discs are fine, really not much different to the mazda parts, its really the pads that will make the difference and as long as the discs arent so rubbish that they will warp easily (not the case with these from experience and heresay from others) then i doubt you would notice any diference in performance. i would go with them and save yourself ££

As above, pads make much more difference than discs - I've been using Pagid discs on my cars (VX220, Octavia and VW Golf GT TDi) for years and they last as long as OEM and work just as well.
