Just picked this up last night, and really impressed so far. K Reg, 1.6 V-Spec Eunos. The paint looked a bit tired at first but spent a while with a DA polisher on it and waxed it and it looks amazing now.

Anyway, can somebody tell me what oil it needs and how often it should be replaced. And when should the cam belt be replaced? Are they susceptible to going? I don’t know when it was last done. The car has done 150k KM.

Very nice.

What size are the wheels and tyres?

Thanks for the comments.

Not sure on the wheels - I'll have a look tomorrow. Wad too busy polishing and waxing today, and then driving!

Seriously makes sense now why there is so much of a dedicated following on here. Not only great handling but a much more powerful engine than I expected. Also the interior is quality! Much better than say a BM for early 90's which I didn't expect. Reminds me of a 348 I used to get a few drives in!!!

Possibly borderline at high revs - belts are more likely to break starting on a cold morning though...

No and really, maybe some better tyres. Definately a once over for fluids etc.

Just getting it ready for an epic drive to south of France!

Pick up Rod Graingers book, called something like 'enthusiasts DIY guide to the MX5'

Can be picked up for about £15

You won't regret it.

NB. Note there are separate 1.8 and 1.6 versions and it looks like the 1.6 is being updated in a few months according to the south american river/rainforest.

So when do I need to change the cam belt?!?

I didn't check the oil before I drove it 200 miles home when I bought it, checked yesterday and Norma drop in it! Pretty bad, mustve had a bit in the sump but none on dipstick! Put 2 litres of 5/30 and that got it past min so mustve had some.

5/30 semi synthetic.

Didn't start last night, lights on dash bearly on, jump-started it ok. Probably due to fact it has spent it's life down south and now had to endure -8 in Yorkshire!

Lastly is there a way you can lock the passenger door when you get out without the key? Most cars without central locking allow you to put the lock on with the door open before closing but this doesn't work.

Loving the car though - got the best gear change I've ever felt!

Hold the handle up as you close it with the button in the locked position.

Which is the same as just about every car I've ever owned without CL (which is most of them).

No normally you just press the thing which pops up and down, down and then shut the door, without fettling the handle

All are the same. If you lock then close the door without holding the handle open the door will unlock itself when it latches. That's a simple security thing that has pretty much always been on all cars. Stops people locking their keys, children, dogs etc. in the car by accident.
