Poor radio reception

My radio suddenly stopped getting decent reception recently, and I'm not sure why...
I've taken the radio out and if it doesn't seem to make any difference whether or not the aerial is plugged into the back, but I'm not sure if this is indicative of the radio being knackered or the aerial? I've pulled apart the radio and can't see anything obviously wrong (broken solders etc.). If I'm holding onto the radio case the reception seems to be ok (presumably I'm acting as the aerial).
Is the only way to be sure getting a new radio and testing it, or is there anything else I can try? NB I don't have a multimeter at the moment...!

I had a problem with my after market stereo in that it would cut out every time I touched it (metal dial).
It was the guys on here that suggested an earthing problem and to connect a piece of wire from the back of the head unit so something metal on the car body (there is a bracket just behind the stereo), worked a treat.
The only reason that I mention this is because you said the reception improves when you hold the stereo case.

There is an earthing wire underneath the centre console (next to the gearstick) but thinking about it I don't think it's attached to the radio. That's usually a bad stereo earth making it earth through the aerial. A speaker wire earthing out somewhere can cause it too...Gassing Station | Mazda MX5/Roadster/Miata | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
