I'd like some inspiration to upset my Wife and drop <£1k on an MX5 mk1. I've fancied one for ages and generally get scared off spending the money on one, in case it's a duffer!

So please inspire me (and others) by popping a link here to cars you think (or know) to be good'uns. Must be under £1k and the lower the better of course. I'd love one for track days and the weekends so please inspire.

Good examples can be found under 1k. Shouldn't really be saying this on here but there are some free ad's websites where you can be pleasantly surprised. You generally find the cheap ones are being advertised by people who just consider it a 20 year old Mazda, rather than a drivers car.

I got mine for £400 (advertised for £500) and it's a rust free example of a Eunos V-Spec. I've owned it since October and all I've had to do was a wheel bearing and clutch slave, both relatively inexpensive jobs. The only downside is that the power windows didn't work, turned out to be broken cables and I've replaced the setup with a manual kit anyway.

Well done chaps this is the sort of grounded sensible posts we need on PH.

However since I currently own seven cars with onother three in build, I fear a purchase of an MX5 might just tip me into another divorce. Of which I have had nearly as many!!

I keep banging on about this being a buyers market.

As you rightly say people are selling a twenty year old car not realising the cachet value to enthusiasts.

Keep the posts up! smilebeersmile

What I'm aiming for here is to see links to the likes of ebay/gumtree for various cars that appear to be good buys or for ones where people have seen them and can say yes or no to what they're like.

The rest of us who may be interested (sub £500 sounds great!) then we can take advantage or the collective knowledge.

I even think that my Wife might allow me to buy a £500 MX5 biggrin

I find the best approach is for a friend to own the car and lend it to you as a return for a favour at work. It would be churlish to refuse such a welcome gift. Its all in the explanation.

I'l make a point when it comes to owning these cars, in that the owners communities are great. I belong to www.mx5nutz.com and there is also the www.mx5oc.com. Nutz is more for the modifying and younger crowd whereas the Owners Club is more family orientated. Both have strong links in Motorsport & Trackdays and a lot of members are on both forums.

Owners clubs generally are IMO really very good news.

The expertise and knowledge seriously rivals that of the original designers.

Some of A series nuts I know from clubs could definitely run against Harry Weslake, in knowledge, and he designed much of the thing.
