Hi guys

Was hoping people would be able to give me a run down of what to look for/listen for when buying a Mk 3 2.0?

This is a bit last minute so my research is a bit thin on the ground.

Blocked drain tubes around the back of the hood (tip water slowly over the back window area and see if it comes out on the floor by the rear wheel arches).

Changes from 1st to 2nd gear when cold can be notchy

Diffs can whine but some are worse than others.

Drop links can break, worth having a look under the car.

Ask when/if a geometry was done and who did it.

Corrosion on inside of discs, inner pad tends to wear quicker than outers and are difficult to check with the wheels on.

Check for wet carpets (never had a problem with either car i've had but others have.
If it's a coupe its worth checking these are dry inside as well as some have also had problems.

There's probably more and I'm sure someone else will be along in a min to add more to the list.

Regards DD.

Thank you for the info chaps/lady chaps, though to be honest I would be grateful for some translation!

I understand that the alignment can be an issue, what precisely is the problem? What is Eibach?

thanks ever so

Mazda(as all manufactures) have set tolerences for the geometry to be set within. These are quite large so all cars pass 'buy off' on the production line. They can be set much closer to optimum by someone who knows what they are doing (centre of gravity and wheels in motion to name but two specialists). If the car has been lowered (eibached) then some technicians don't re-tighten the suspension arms at ride height (most dealerships have two post ramps that let the wheels droop to rebound and so they get tightened in this position) This means the bush gets twisted when the wheels are back on the ground and causes poor handling.

The good news is that all the above is an easy fix but it's worth budgeting around £120 to get the alignment done. I know others have had it done cheaper by other specialists but I would use someone known within the MX5 community.
