MX5 project take 2 starts next month with an engine change after I discovered that months of impossible to diagnose coolant loss came from a faulty head and who knows what else internal damage.

Just wondering what other jobs are useful to do or parts to renew whilst an engine is out? Good time to check the clutch and flywheel condition? Clean up the engine bay? Any other odds and ends?

Check/replace the water pump, seen 2 different mk1s water pump blades fail due to coolant not being changed often enough.

Had a new water pump last year so that's going on the replacement engine.

Rear crank seal & if you are going FI, might pay to think about a coolant reroute.

Fit a V8. Rawwr!!

Clean and repaint engine bay for a boring but more useful answer.

Replace all those hoses that are hard to reach when the engine is in the car, e.g. if it's a 1.8 the hose from the back of the head to the oil filter housing. You could also remove, copper grease and replace those bolts that you might need to get to in the future, such as the starter motor mounting bolts.

This. And a new clutch while you have it all apart.
