Will update this thread..

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Yeah, so the engine is a bit heavier and the power gains are minimal, but they call my friend 'Mad Baz' for a reason.

Rotten Scimitar with a decent engine gave its life so I could drag its heart in my CRV back to my house.Let the games begin!

It's been quite a social thing with 10 or so of us round here having BBQ's and other MX-5 peeps showing up.All good fun.

Got the engine sitting relatively pretty in the engine bay today, so things may advance a bit more quickly now.He really only has a week to finish this project! At a later stage, the gearbox will probably end up as a type 9 and there will undoubtedly be some engine mods (triple webers?), but for now, this is where we are at..

We are both off all week, so I will update.

Hell yeh!

There does seem to be the lack of Mx5s with engine conversions.

Other than the reason : "because we can", I have to ask : "Why ?"

Tell me please it wasn't because the rocker covers were the wrong colour for the car !!
wink

(I have wondered whether the 2.0l MX6 V6 would be a good donor too)
Rocker covers tend to change colour a lot amongst my circle of friends! Something cheap and different are the main reasons. He did the same with a Rover V8 in a Nissan. The MX5 was going to be supercharged for a while, but it was quite a high mile example, so he decided to swap the whole engine instead. It's also quite a compact and simple V6.

I just love his attitude.Nothing is a problem and he will break out the angle grinder and the welder inbetween bites on his lunch.I watched him ripping out the wiring loom earlier and he was just figuring out what he needed and didn't need on the fly.None of that googling rubbish. This is his first MX-5 so he has no previous experience of them at all. hehe

He has not looked at a single Haynes manual type book or informative web page either since he started.I have to go check to see how the centre console is removed and this guy will have half the car stripped by the time I come back.

I did help with more bits and bobs today though. He gave me a sheet of metal and asked me to make a cover for the air intake. It didn't come out too badly..

Old paint removed..

I've got an Alfa 3.0 24v sitting around...any thoughts on gearboxes?? Someone suggested that as there are quite a lot of turbo'd mx5's out there, maybe the standard mk2 1.8 of mine might hold up??

Come on, help me out here!! confused

That power/torque would be no problem for an MX5 gearbox. If in doubt, the 6-speed is supposed to be a bit stronger. The weak point will be the dif. The 1.8 Torsen LSD will be the one to go for.

Does an Alfa engine fit? Does it spin the right way?

I'm pretty sure my mates 200+ bhp supercharged mk1 is on a standard box. Only uprated part being the clutch assembly. Will try and find out exactly what it's running.

It will be on the standard box. 5 speeds give up north of 300ft/lbs. 6 speeds are even stronger.

An aftermarket gearset is the only way to get an even stronger, (bolt on no conversion nonsense), box and those are usually far too expensive for 99% of the MX5 community (5k+ from quaife), who baulk at the thought of having to pay more than 1k for a supercharger kit rolleyes.

Does it matter which way it spins?? I want the fastest reversing mx5 in the world!! scratchchin

Only joking!...there is quite a few RWD Alfa conversions out there; The 24v is an evolution of the alfa 75 12v motor, and that is RWD, albeit a transaxle at the rear...

the V6 measures approx 24" square, and approx 25-26" tall
