US spec vs UK spec power difference

Sorry if this has been done to death but searching doesn't seem to be turning up any answers.
I notice that the current MX-5 UK model with the 2.0 engine has a power output of 158bhp whereas the US model with what appears to be the same engine gets 167bhp. Is it actually the same engine that has been modified for the different markets? Why would this be done?
I'm guessing this might be something to do with being able to allow longer service intervals; the service interval here is 12500 miles or annually, whereas in the US it's 7,500 miles or 6 months. Is it just down to having to fit in with expectations in the UK where longer and longer service intervals seem to be the norm?
