Stripped an MX5 to use for a donor for an exocet. Completed the wiring and it started first time, happy days! Ended up cutting a few connectors which resulted in it then not starting. To save hassle i ordered a replacement loom and proceeded to install this. Done everything the same as the first time but now it starts then stops after a couple of seconds. Then, unless i leave it for a few minutes it struggles to start. Has anybody got an idea of what the problem could be? Ive attached a video below of myself starting the car to give a better idea. Any help is much appreciated as at the moment its driving me (or not as the case may be!) nuts!

Ive been having a google and found the paperclip diagnosis tip. Think i might give that a try, is there a fault code for the fuel pump?

is it a 1.6? If so check your AFM & its wiring, the AFM keeps the fuel pump running after startup (the ignition key primes the pump for a few seconds only when you start it) Had this issue when I put a megasquirt on my old 5, you need to paperclip the diag box to make the pump run all the time the ignition is on to confirm (I left mine like that all the time)

have you jumpered the fuel pump in the diag box to see if the engine runs when you set the pump to run all the ime?

So i done the paper clip and LED test earlier and it came up with Fault Code 26. This solenoid valve (evaporative cannister purge)

no, jumper the fuel pump in the dia port so it runs all the time, then see if it runs, evap error is a red herring, don't worry about that

jumper F/P to GND and the fuel pump comes on whenever the ignition is on. http://www.miataforumz.com/how-40/diagnostic-port-...
I think once you have done this the engine will run okay

I have found out the cause. After getting the fault code i hit google and ended up on a thread regarding the removal of the charcoal filter (which i have already done) and it pointed out the capping off of a few bits. Well these 'bits' i had capped off but remembered i had un-capped them a couple of months back whilst fiddling about in the engine bay with the radiator and air feed and realised i hadnt re-capped them. So i sealed them off and it started first time and runs smoothly. These were the 'bits' that were the cause of it (image borrowed off google)

Thanks scwright for your suggestions, i was just about to do what you suggested regarding the fuel pump had i not realised the obvious mistake i had made.
