MX5 or Boxster S?

No you're not.I had a 2.0l & it seemed like the engine had been de-tuned by some margin to offer decent mpg. No torque to speak of - couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.

Hi VladD
My MX5 is my everyday drive. I had an Elise for nine years and find the MX5 totally boring to drive. I suppose it is typically Japanese and completely anasthetic! Perhaps I am wrong but I need someone to convince me before I spend shedloads of money!

I suppose in some respects it may come down to your talent behind the wheel. I had an Impreza Type-R a few years ago. Very, very fast, loads of grip, made a great noise, but it was a far more capable a car than I was a driver, so though I could drive it enthusiastically, I could never feel like I had mastered it. My Mk1 MX5 is the complete opposite. Easy to have fun in, though very little in the way of creature comforts and not very fast in a straight line.My MX5 is my everyday drive. So again I have to ask why you're considering the Boxster? As an every day driver it's going to be more luxurious and faster, so if you're after an every day driver then it may be the answer. If you're after something that you can chuck around at the weekends, then MX5 for most or Boxster if you have the talent.
Of course you could always give the money to BBR and have a supercharged MX5. Could be the best of both worlds.

Hi VladD
It will purely be a road car. My weekend "chuck about" cars have ranged from several Mallock Clubman cars to a 450Hp Single Seater - that was fun! Before the Elise I ran a Westfield with a 150hp Lotus Twin Cam on the road.

I can see why you find the MX5 a tad dull then. Having experienced things like that I'd imagine your expectations of a sports car have been elevated to higher than most.It will purely be a road car. The only thing I would say is that if you're after the buzz of an Elise or a Westfield you may have trouble getting it from a Boxster, at least at road legal speeds. You may also find it a bit grown up compared to what you're used to. It has been mentioned on a few other threads that people have gone from an MX5 to a Boxster and then back again because the Boxster just wasn't as much fun. Have you thought about a TVR Tamora/T350C or maybe even a Noble M12? You'd still be travelling quickly in those but they may have the rawness that you require too.
I guess some sensible questions would be:
-did you like the Elise? If so what did you like specifically and what didn't you like?
-Why did you get rid of the Elise?
-Is there anything you like about the MX-5? And I guess why did you buy it?
-What are you hoping to attain with a Boxster S over the MX?
I guess a good long test drive of a Boxster is going to be the best thing to see if it appeals or not.

My OH has a mk1 MX5 which had a near-death experience recently.
I was trying to introduce the Boxster idea to her (you know, like whispering it to her in her sleep etc). But she's got the impression one would be thirstier, possibly less reliable, and definitely more expensive when it did go wrong.
Sadly I suspect she's right.
Then the damn MX5 came back from the dead anyway.

I loved my Elise. It was 13 years old when I sold it and still on the original head gasket and floor. I could see big bills on the horizon.
I had to rationalise the fleet as we had too many cars. I thought that I would buy a Lotus Europa to replace it. People started muttering that if I was to spend that sort of money I was into Cayman country. I still wanted a soft top so it took me into Boxsters. I know very little about them so that is why I asked the question in the first place.
I enjoyed driving the Elise as it seemed very compact and precise. The MX5 seems like a great lump of a car. Perhaps I would have been happier with a Mk1 or a Mk2.
