Its an Ultra High Performance C.D.I system I think.

Google tells me that C.D.I. may stand for Capacitor Discharge Ignition.

a kit for producing fog?? As they are both wired into the ignition circuit with some fairly beefy wires im still thinking ignition booster. There must be an advantage to someone going to the effort of fitting them surely?

Yes. An aftermarket kit for making fog. That's exactly what I meant.

Possibly this after some judicious use of google?

I will photograph the box in mine when I get 5 for comparison, I had always assumed it was something to do with the crappy aftermarket fog LIGHT kit, but now I'm not so sure.

Capacitive Discharge Ignition, it is a form of ignition booster

you can see an Ultra 9100 system in action here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtf0NT-LrII

and on a Miata forum thread here:
http://forum.miata.net/vb/archive/index.php/t-2643...

[quote]This is capacitive discharge ignition (generally shorter pulses than the inductive "Kettering" system the Miata comes with). IIRC, patented in 1975 by MSD, you have time for a repeat spark at low RPM to reduce the effects of random misfires. Biggest bonus is that cleans up emissions, but it might reduce the stumble of a misfire here and there. You won't get multiple sparks at higher RPMs though - not enough time to get them in. I wouldn't bother with either system.
