Hi all,

This might be a silly question but should my NA 1.6 Eunos have a heat shield on the exhaust manifold? It doesn't have one and has melted the air box, it was melted whilst owned by the previous owner but I want to prevent it happening again if I fit a new air box. I might go with an induction filter and heat shield but not made up my mind yet.

Yes.. they do have heat shields normally unless someone has replaced the manifold with a more fruity one?

Or just removed it due to it rattling.

Thanks for the replies. The manifold doesn't appear to be anything special, certainly not stainless so I don't think I've got lucky there. I imagine rattling was more of an issue.

Time to search the internet for a replacement.

Get yourself a roll of heat wrap. Will be more effective than the standard heatsheild.

Ooooh good plan!! Less rattly too I'd imagine.

Yup. Nothing to rattle with heat wrap. Bit of a pita to do but worth it. Especially if you go down the induction kit route.

Heat wraps have arrived! That's my Sunday planned! Will let you know how it goes.

Andy is that a generic induction kit from eBay? Have you got any concerns about how well it will filter the air? There's some on eBay for under £20, I know they won't improve performance but they should sound great. Just worried that a cone that cheap won't filter the air properly. Sorry if that's not a cheap induction kit, I'm viewing on my mobile. Looks great either way!

Have to say, that's the first time I have heard of an airbox melting! Was it all in its standard position? Not saying it can't happen, just supirsed is all.I ran a SS manifold and exhaust with no shield and it was fine and so did several friends.

That's worrying. I pressume it was in its standard position. I've only had it just over a month so I'm still trying to find out what the previous owner has 'fettled' with. Its currently running a barryesque fart cannon that needs to come off!

The melting on the box is in the bottom left corner of the air box if looking at it from the front, that's what makes me think its the manifold. The manifold gets seriously hot pretty much from start up, I know the car is running rich which I pressume is making the heat in the manifold worse. I'll post some pictures of the box while I'm heat wrapping the manifold. I'm not going to leave it running rich, I plan to get the heat wraps on to prevent any more melting issues and to cool the engine bay down, should buy me some time to work on it running rich.

Running rich actually cools the engine, it's running lean that causes excessive heat.
