Hello everyone,

I have had a number of great years with my mx5, it's been fantastic and has asked so little. However I have just had it back from its MOT and listed on advisory items is "Vehicle is heavily corroded (suspension and chassis)".

Having a quick search through google it looks like there are a few places that offer chassis rail repair, but I think the problem is effecting the whole chassis rather than just part of it. I thought I'd post here to see what the experts have to say?

Does this signal the end for my poor car or does anyone know of a solution?

(Car is a 98 mk2 1.8s, 106k miles)

Thanks

A possible solution could be turn it into a Westfield SDV.

Hard to say without knowing exactly where the rust is...

From what the garage said it sounds like the whole chassis is suffering from it unfortunately.

Most MX5s are pretty nasty underneath if I'm honest.

Give it a wire brush and underseal, will look brand new.

Wot he said. They all rust on the surface. What they probably mean by chassis is the rails. Wire brush and waxoil and plates where you can put your finger through and you'll be fine. If the sills are rusty it will cost a fair bit more. Suspension rust will be surface rust. Brush down and seal. Easiest way to find out what is wrong is to have a chat with the guys that did the mot

I'm sorry, it's failed it's MOT due to rust and you advise a wire brush and underseal will solve it?

Pics OP, as many as possible and we'll let you know if it's salvageable.

It's hard to tell, for instance when my mk1 failed its MOT initially they thought it was just the outer shell, but when they went to weld a patch in there wasn't anything to weld to.
