Not even picked it up yet but the visa card is already burning a hole in my pocket !!

Ive previously seen mk1's on wheels that I can best describe as being very simmilar to old mini cooper style alloys - maybe 8 / 10 spoke split rim style - but cannot find them when searching alloy wheel suppliers.

Can one of you guru's please point me in the right direction ?

The Rotas are RBs. Black Racing make also make them, almost identical to Wats.

wats are a great choice for the mx. I've got these waiting to refurb and go on mine.

I have Rota RB's on mine, 8 x 15 with a 30mm offset, makes the car look fantastic!

Also have a look at the wheels on this MX-5 currently on eBay:

so....

black car with tan interior - what colour wheels ? black, silver or (although i'm usually allergic to them on other cars) gold ?

You can get away with any colour on black. I also have the Black and Tan combo. I think I'm going for anthracite.
