Hi all,

I picked up my mk1 Uk car last Wednesday, I'll put up a separate thread about it in a min..

Was wondering about suggestions for security. There was once a Piranha Alarm on it (very faded stickers in window and a redundant led in the centre console) but it's not live any more. One day it'll be treated to a cat 1 alarm, immobiliser, central locking, boot release type arrangement (not to mention replacing the locks and ignition so they all work off the same key!!) But for not I'd like a cheap secuirity suggestion.

Removable steering wheel (quick release racing style boss) - Anyone with any suggestions or experience, particularly with cheap ones. Would allow me to lock the wheel in the boot so it ain't going nowhere!

Wheel crook - suggestions for model

Some kind of cheap alarm that I can DIY install

Maybe a cheap place in either essex or s yorks that will install an immobiliser on the cheap?

Other more inventive solutions wink

Cheers

Disklok. Used off eBay they sell for £20 for one with two keys, or £5-£10 for those with one key. Look for those local enough to collect in person.

...do you live in a high car crime area? I also thought about all this but decided against it as are mk1. 5's That knickable? I've replied on the standard imobilizer for 2 years without any problems...

I used one on my NB, which has an integrated immobiliser. Its advantage is that its a massive deterrant to potential thieves.

Hi chaps,

I live in central Bham and recently picked up a 99 car. Does anyone know if they come as standard with an immobiliser? There's no fob or anything with the keys but there is a red blinking light on the transmission tunnel, and a funny beeping noise when I turn the car off...

Mk2 British cars have an integrated immobiliser, with a smart key, an immobiliser unit and ECU which are all linked together. Japanese market cars just had a key!

Depending when they were imported (with how old they were at the time being relevant), they may have had to have had a minimum of a Thatcham Category 2 immobiliser fitted in order to pass an SVA test. If they were over ten years old (so first registered here in 2009 or later) then they dont have to have anything, so a cheap eBay special may have been fitted.

Oh...

Fairly sure I've just got a key. Also fairly sure it's not an import! Perhaps it's knackered and the red light blinks anyway? My key looks like the below: (I should add my car is pov spec and has manual unlocking doors...)

The original NB keys have a small head, but its rounded. The factory immobiliser will activate a red key symbol tell tale lamp in the instrument custer when operated. From memory I think that mine came on as the car was turning over.
