Hi all,

In the new year will be in the market for a five (my first) my budget is £1000 max and I'd want the 1.8. For insurance and spec (LSD, more likely to get good history) I'd prefer a UK car.

Is it possible to get a UK 1.8 for less than a grand without rust?

I've seen imports that would fit the bill (general condition not imperative I'd just want it rust free and mechanically sound)but have yet to see a UK car within budget.

Guess I may have to sit tight and watch the forums / ebay / pistonheads / AT but if this is never going to happen then I may have to adjust my expectations!

Just bought a 1.8, 1 owner, 60k miles, totally rust free and pretty much immaculate, all for £900. They are out there.

I got mine 3 months ago on Autotrader: UK 1.8, no rust, just over £1k with new hood and discs/calipers. You'll be lucky to find one with LSD though. Basic UK 1.8i like mine came without pas, abs, electric windows, pure and simple. So yes, they are out there, but finding a bog standard unmolested one is getting harder.

As mentioned they are out there but not too easy to find

Mine was rust free but couple of bits poking through now. I have done 12000 miles since July in it though including Italy and back. Brilliant little cars and one of my favourites.

Mines probably a keeper till I can afford a 911 so it's here for a year or so I reckon (optimistic year)

Try and get a hardtop if you can mines much nicer in winter for it

I see a few topics like this, asking 'where' to find rust free cars. It's not like there are certain criteria when selling one "If it has rust you sell it on x website, and if it doesn't have rust you sell it on y website" It's simply a case of looking!

FYI, Footman James didn't care whether mine was an import or not. Get on the phone to some specialists.

I didn't think the UK mk1s came with an LSD, my 1.8s didn't (that had ABS, airbag, electric mirrors etc), UK ones are also likely to be more rusty.

My UK'94 1.8 has a Torsen in it.

Feck know whether it came from the factory like that, allegedly it was an optional extra?

Will defo get another at some point.

If anyone spots a rust-freeish Merlot for a bag of sand, can they let me know?!

I picked up a 96 1.8 G-Ltd import for a bit over your budget. Sills and body all rust free, but wishbones have surface rust so will get treated and protected in the spring. Thing has just sprung a water pump leak through, so there re perhaps other areas to look at other than just rusty sills and chassis legs.
