Some help please people of Pistonheads.

My clutch has finally given up on me so I decided to have a go at fitting a new one myself. I managed to get the clutch kit for £12 more than the garage would charge so if the worst comes to the worst I'm only £12 down on what I would be paying anyway. I've had a crack at changing it and have come unstuck after not getting very far at all. I can't get two of the nuts at the top of the bell housing undone. I can get the socket on one of them but there's a pipe in the way so I can't attach a socket. The other is right at the top of the bell housing, I haven't tried to undo this one yet as there seemed little point as I wouldn't be able to get any further.

Before I give up and call a garage to fit it for me I though I'd see if anyone else has had similar problems removing the gearbox. I've considered removing the bolts that hold the gearbox to the PPF (with the gearbox supported on a jack) and lowering it slightly to get the engine to tilt, this may give me more room. Is this a good idea or am I like to break something or would the engine mounts give up?

The bolts in the bell housing around the starter are a PITA to get to but a combination of long wobble-bar extensions should be able reach.
The one that is being fouled - is that on the left hand side? I seem to remember having trouble with one around there somewhere. I think we had to remove something so we could get to the bolt.

The one on the left needs the downpipe removing according to the guide I've got. I've got an aftermarket manifold and it seems to stick out further as I was able to ram my arm up there and get to it without removing anything. It's the one on the drivers side that I just can't get to. The pipe blocking it is solid and it doesn't look like bending it out the way is a good idea.

Did you find getting the gearbox out the biggets PITA or is there more to come?

edited to add crucial missing word. lol

Gearbox coming out wasn't too bad once we found a way to get to all the bolts. Getting it back in was more of a pain, especially as it was only on axle stands! A couple of people under the car and another with a strap around the engine through the gear-stick hole made it a bit easier.
That was on a 93 Mk1 1.6.
