Coilovers prices ?
Discussion
Hey everyone I'm looking at getting a set of Coilovers on my 98 mk2 mx5 but I was wondering if there is a large difference between the more expensive set ups like bilstien Gaz koni etc than the more cheaper brands. All I'm looking for is something that will work well on the road and be good enough for the accasional track day. Any help would be great and if you can recomend any brands that would be great.

Hello, there are literally miles of threads on the Internet about which is better etc...and I have gone around the houses wading through them. I came to the conclusion that for my type of requirement, which is just like yours, keep it standard. Learn how the car handles and drive around any problems...you can spend alot of cash on aftermarket coilovers (which is what the standard set-up is anyway), for a compromised car which is neither a trackday hero or a good road car....the Mazda suspension was set-up by people who know what they are doing, spent a lot of money developing it and it has been road tested for milions of miles in the past 25 year...my plan is to renovate the suspension and steering gradually rePlacing tired components with OEM parts...IMO of course...The odds are that the shocks on your car are 15 years old and possibly worn and whilst I sort of agree that Mazda did come up with a nice comfy ride, the OEM had 155lb front springs and 96lb rears with light roll bars, less than perfect for pushing hard on road or track IMHO.
When you consider that the race cars run 500lb front and 300lb rear and the fast road/trackday cars run 400lb front with 300lb rears, you can see that unless you start limiting roll with bigger ARB's the OEM is less than perfect.
The choice of kits is immense for MX5's and I'm not going into that but anything you buy that's adjustable should have service agents in the UK IMHO, nuff said
