MK2 1.8 misfire..... Any ideas?

Right chaps, got a little problem and was wondering if any of you could help out.
I've got a MK2 1.8 that has quite a bad misfire when it gets warm. It's almost like anti-lag in its manner. Pops and bangs a bit as it looses power and the rev counter jumps up and down. When it's cold it idles and drives fine but once warmed up its really quite bad. Doesn't like to idle either and stalls. It's pretty un-drive able when it starts.
It's just recently had full service, timing belt, plugs, etc. Tried new plug leads today and no difference and also tried the coil packs from my mates car that I know work fine.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I feel your pain!
Had similar, in fact near identical, issues on my mk1 1.8 and went to the trouble of changing plugs, leads, coilpack, cam angle sensor, maf sensor, ecu and immobilser in search of curing the issue. It still remained!
After spending all that time and effort I finally tracked down the issue to the ignition barrel not being correctly bolted down to the steering column......it had been bodged on by a previous owner and one of the bolts had undone itself due to only being wound on by the slightest amount of thread. Still kicking myself for not noticing this sooner, still, now I have plenty of spare parts should anything else go wrong in the future
Your symptoms sound very similar to mine so It could well be ignition related seeing as you have ruled out most of the main areas of concern. Is it possible to do the DIY fault reader on the MK2? Its worth a try to see what error codes crop up.

On further investigation I've came across a random wire! It looked to go to somewhere under the inlet manifold so I whipped that of expecting to see a sensor of some sort with no wires going to it. Nope!! Can't see where it goes. Pics below show what I'm talking about.
Anyone have any ideas where this should go to??

Sorry if you have disconnected this and already well aware! Cant help on the mystery wire I'm afraid. Have you tried asking on MX5 nutz? Its much busier on there and you are more likely to get better educated answers than from me
