Hi all, problem I've noticed with the wife's new (to us) MX-5 RC:

I've found one or two similar topics (this one in particular http://www.mx-5.com/Forum/Room/Topic/?topicId=1668... through searching about but am hoping for some more advice.

It has quite a strong smell of fuel in the boot. It's worse now the weather is warming up and if the car is left for a couple of days. It's quite potent when you first open the lid.

After reading the above thread I took all the trim out of the boot and had a good look around. It's all spotless in there and all the visible hose sections look good.

The overflow pipe (that the owner of the other thread applied silicon and cable ties to in his case) does pull off quite easily but there is not even a trace of fuel smell in the pipe itself so I don't think this is to blame in my case. Plus I've never splashed any fuel around the filler. Speaking of which the fuel filler area does not smell at all, unless the cap is removed (with a woosh sound).

Here is a pic or two of the pipes. It's hard to tell where the smell is coming from as it clears once the boot has been open for a while. But it seems strongest at the farthest part where the pipes disappear into the rubber gaiter as in the first pic:

If I stick my head right in this area I can smell petrol even when the boot has been open for a while.

There's two of these adjustable clips on the main filler pipe. One shown here and the other near the rubber gaiter. I've nipped both up but they seemed to be tight anyway:

The other end of the pipes. All dry and clean:

The one on the left is the overflow that pulls of with ease but as I said this does not smell at all when I stick my nose in it!

The car has a Mazda warranty but I don't have much faith in dealers so any advice/experiences would be much appreciated so I can at least get some background knowledge if not a fix that I can do myself.

Thanks for reading.

Hi, I have the identical problem on my 2007 model. ie all pipes are tight and good nick but the whiff seems to be towards the rubber boot area towards the cabin. Did you resolve the fuel smell problem? I've searched everywhere and can seem to find a solution. Thanks
