I'm going to a view an MX5 tomorrow and in a buying guide I read, it told me to push on the throttle valve to make the engine rev and listen to abnormal ticking noises...thing is, what do I push to make the engine?

EDIT: For some reason it won't let me post pics here. Link below:

The part the throttle cable is attached to, it pivots clockwise around the bolt in the middle. If your looking right at it just turn it clockwise to raise the revs, its spring loaded so will snap back when released.

A better way would be to pull the throttle cable rather than turning the throttle cam. It'll only need a little pull to hear the engine rev.
Not sure I agree with the idea though. These engines are pretty noisy with various rattles so unless you know what you are listening out for I don't think you'll learn anything.

Thanks guys!

I'll give it a go. Like you say, I'm sure I won't notice anything faint but it'll help me hear anything overly strange sounding.

you'll hear top end rattle, but you'll probably hear that at idle anyway - won't need revs.
anyway, as above, the bit you need to turn is on the drivers side of the engine, got a cable going into it.
