MX5 rebuild problems
Discussion
Hi I finally got my mx5 running yesterday but I had some problems I was wondering if anyone had any advice they could give me, the problems were -
1. the ignition timing was abit out (think I just need to get that timed up and have a fiddle with the cas)
2. Very noisy tappets dont know why just did a oil change before starting it for the first time
3. On start up it burnt alot of oil like a white/blue smoke but died off after 5 minutes dont know if this is becuase oil will have gotten all around the exhaust when we were rebuilding it
4. we turned the car off for some unknown reason tried to start again and just had a ticking sound when you tried to crank it over but didnt sound to me like starter motor (I have read other threads and it sounds like a flat battery)
thanks shaun

1. Ignition timing is easy. Cam timing might be out if the cam-belt has been changed.
2. If it's sat around for a while the HLAs (hydraulic lifter assemblies i.e. tappets) can get gummed up and stick.
3. Was any oil dripped down the spark-plug holes to lubricate the engine before start-up?
4. Is the alternator properly connected up?

got it started today and after awhile the tappets went pretty quiet I dont think the cam timing is out because it runs pretty sweet just need to sort the ignition timing. And no I didnt drip oil down the spark plug holes before start up should I have done?2. If it's sat around for a while the HLAs (hydraulic lifter assemblies i.e. tappets) can get gummed up and stick.
