brake master cylinder / servo
Discussion
I had a poke around the master cylinder yesterday, the servo is quite rusty down the front under the cylinder, although I don't think its leaking anywhere at the moment. I'm going to have a proper check with a screwdriver / centre punch at the weekend to see if the casing is still solid, but in case it's knackered does anyone know how tricky it is to swap the servo?
I've rebuilt the engine a few times, replaced it completely, fitted new suspension etc.. so I know most of the car, the one area i've never touched is the braking system apart from the actual calipers.
The brakes feel quite soft, although it still is easily able to lock the wheels on a dry road, so I guess its all working, but I've got a long trip in it soon and I don't want the servo to suddenly develop a leak / explode.

Servo to master cylinder pushrod settings are critical and seem to be a complete nightmare to set without the proper Mazda special tools. This makes replacing either the master cylinder or the servo for a new/better one somewhat difficult.
Remove the master cylinder and check the rear seal for signs of leaking. Although my servo had sustained obvious paint damage and some surface corrosion from a brake fluid spill at sometime in the past the master cylinder seals were intact. I just cleaned up the servo a bit, applied some Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 and put it all back together.

Thanks for the info - is it that tricky a job even on an older car? Mine is a 1992 Eunos 1.6, i was hoping it would just be a case of pull out the servo and screw in a new one. There are no leaks around the master cylinder, I think the rust and flaked paint was caused quite a while back, and I've had it for a few years now.
