Hey everybody,

The handbook for the car states that it's evil and barbaric to take the needle past 7000rpm. I assumed there would a rev limiter preventing me from doing so, but to my surpise there isn't (I think I hit 7200)

Does a fuel cut eventually kick in? What is the max RPM these engines can repeatedly take?

Also on a separate note, I need to replace my rear exhaust section too and I'm looking for a good sounding replacement. I don't want the bore of the tail pipe any bigger than standard. Any suggestions?

Many thanks,

Matt

There is a rev limiter and its very noticeable when you hit it!

What your seeing is that the Tacho is just not very accurate, particular at higher revs, it tends to 'lag' behind the actual engine speed a bit too I think.

Hello Matt,

i think you'll find that max torque is reached well before the 7000 red line therefore just revving the nuts out with no gain. i shouldnt worry if you gi over this on the odd occasion. I find it wierd doing a ton with the tacho reading 5000, the Jags are only purring around the 3k mark at that speedbiglaugh

As for the back box, have a look at the MX5parts catalogue on line, something for everyone in there, have you heard mine lately?thumbup

Peak torque is around 5k but peak hp is nearer to 6.5k so for quickest acceleration you should be changing gear around 7k.
There is no harm in hitting the rev limiter occasionally. You just wouldn't want to be driving around at 60mph in 2nd bouncing off the rev limiter constantly.
The limiter will be around 7200 and it'll cut the spark rather than the fuel (a much safer method for the engine).
When I took you out in mine I hit the limiter a couple of times wink

Thanks for taking the time to reply guys smile Got the engine oil up to operating temp and found the limiter, it's quite noticeable biggrin Strange vibrating noise higher up the rev range. Will check the exhaust heat shields once I've returned from my North Wales holiday smile
