Popped into Costco last Friday and as well as the usual supplies of coffee, dog food, etc, I emerged the proud owner of 5 litres of Mobil 1 for £25 plus a new trolley jack. I've owned Halfords type DIY jacks for years but with the MX5 being a little lower than standard a normal jack won't go low enough so I'd already puchased a low entry jack. However, it was still a case of jacking under the sills first and then juggling axle stands and a second jack to get the car where I wanted it.

This new jack is rated at 2 tons and is aluminium, so while not exactly light, it is manageable. More to the point, though, it has the low entry height and the reach to go underneath the front of the car, where the wide, rubber padded saddle can reach the sub frame cross member, and can then lift the who front end to the point where I can easily place ramps underneath the wheels. And unlike my other jacks, it has the height to get my wife's Freelander's wheels airborne.

In fact, this looks like being the most useful bit of kit I've bought in years. It cost £89 + VAT, which struck me as very good value.

I've got one of those, nicely built and solid and just fits under the mx5 which is lowered !

Surely the whole point of ramps is that you can drive up them, isn't it?

Doh, never thought of that! Normally yes but on my drive they have an annoying tendency to skid forward as I drive up them so it's great to know I can just jack the car up instead.

Price quoted is more than the £89+VAT that I paid in store.
