MX5 Bike Rack & Rear Board Electrics

Hey everyone,
I am looking at putting a bike rack onto the Mazda (NB). One of the biggest challenges though is that a rear board (containing a number plate and brake lights) will need to be fitted if the rear lights are obscured.
Does anyone have any experience or advice on how to go about this? The Saris bones bike rack does look a little pricey.
Additionally, if someone can find me a method where the rear lights aren't obscured at all then that would be awesome.
