Accepted Greeting
Discussion
Today I took my car out for a drive out over the Lincolnshire Wolds and on the way I came across 3 other guys with the same idea all in a little convoy coming the other way, the lead car popped his lights up the middle chap gave me a thumbs up and the chap at the back cave me a wave.
Round where I live everyone is a miserable
and I've driven past many a 5 driver and waved at them only for them to look at me like I've raped them, so with such a warm display from the little mx5 convoy I was so overwhelmed I could only think to manage a smile and a wave, when really I'd have liked some pop up light action and a thumbs up.
What do you guys do if you come across a fellow mx5 driver? I feel we should have a standardised greeting.

Pull over and discuss "Frizzease" and styling moose...Funny you should post this as I've just come in from a run with some hot rod driving mates. Over the course of about sixty miles I saw at least five other MX5s, four with the tops down and a steel top with it fixed firmly in place, most looked baffled when I waved...
For years I've driven fairly unusual stuff and if you see anything similarish a wave was the instant response, always was with Spitfires, 2CVs etc. So don't worry mate, if I see you out I'll wave, I don't care what others think I'm enjoying myself.
I usually wave if the mx5 looks modified. Usually a non standard number plate is the give a way. Most times I get a wave back.
The best one I got was driving through Edinburgh and a German plated BRG MK1 drove the other way with driver on the left side waving above the windscreen. I still had the hardtop on at the time but had the window down so gave the thumbs up out the window.
Saying that, some people are just miserable bar stewards. I saw another mariner blue MK1 like mines, clearly modified, so gave him the wave and he just stared me out. Tbh he looked like a right little hood rat scummy wee prick.

Only for MK1 drivers though as I get a good response rate, most MK2/3 owners just look at you strange.
This! Best response I ever had was in the middle of winter, NA coming the other way with his roof down, done up in thick coat and beanie hat, smiling like the b
d love child of a grinning loon and the Cheshire Cat! =>
There were probably thumbs up and stuff, but it's that mad smile I remember!

Just a quick question here... as a newbie...
On my old 924 if you operated the headlamp flash/pass light the lights would pop up, flash and retract. Is there a similar function on MX5s (U.K.) as my '93 Eunos doesn't appear to have it? The lights need to be switched on and off with the rotating switch on the right stalk.

Just pull the stalk towards you as if enabling full beam ?On my old 924 if you operated the headlamp flash/pass light the lights would pop up, flash and retract. I prefer the earlier modified flash to pass function to the standard one on my later car. The modded version keeps the lights up as long as you hold the stalk, whereas the lights pop up for a set time and flash only while you hold the stalk on my 1994 car. Well, actually, they don't now on my specific car because something's broken and the lights only pop up with the manual opener on the dash, even when I turn the headlight stalk to on...

Probably just too old to have it; the flash to pass function became standard for the 1994 model year. You can add it to an earlier car with the simple addition of a diode; google 'flash to pass mod'.

oh right didn't realise that. Mine must have had the mod done to it already then I prefer the earlier modified flash to pass function to the standard one on my later car. I've started waving at every mx5 I see now, based on what people have said on this thread. Get a few waves back ( they must know I'm part of our elite club), but mostly confused looks or just completely ignored.
And now I have some more tinkering to do putting the flash to pass mod on my car. Splendiferous.

Ah, I'd wave but I drive one of the new fangled ones with Bose, air-con and electric everything - not modified in any way whatsoever. However, in it's very, very short ownership so far, I've covered nearly a thousand miles; 95% of that with the top down.
Come the winter, though, I shall be tooling around with the top down and obligatory woolly hat on display. Sod the passenger

I passed a metallic blue mark 1 with his tan hood up in York Tuesday morning. I flashed him ( Mk1 BRG ) and apparently he was making coffee in the car as I got the beans from him?
I find this really confusing as whilst post mark 1 drivers don't seem to have the same mindset in the main, every other Mk 1 driver I have come across has always waved....seems to be the unwritten law!
Maybe he was just borrowing it as it wasn't raining and the hood was up!!
