Shouln't my mk2 have a grille to protect the radiator? It looks pretty vunerable to stones etc at the moment.

Not as standard. My MK1 has done over 100,000 without one so the rad is not that vulnerable..... fingers crossed....

a black honeycomb one looks good and OE on my black Mk.1 - courtesy MX5parts.

Beware they aid overheating.

Not a problem for average cars but modified / track cars, they can certainly tip over the edge.
