Replacement keys?

When I bought my MX5 it only came with one key. Fine enough, not a problem, old car. Can always get another cut, etc.

Well, earlier today I managed to twist it in the boot lock - was only halfway in and I was a bit gung-ho with the unlocking. Long story short, the key's cracked across the middle, so it needs replacing pronto before it gets stuck in the ignition barrel or something.

It's a 96P, and there's a blob on the keyfob, so I assume it has an immobiliser that would need coding - can I get a new master key from Mazda? How do I go about doing this - just phone the local garage?

Key-cutting shops can do these, including coding the immobiliser for not much money IIRC Timpson's (the shoe repair/key cutting bods) quoted me £17 last time I asked

Are you sure it has an imob in the key? probs is if it is a later mk1

Mine is a UK M reg, with an old school simple key. Went to local key cutter, £3 later and hey presto, new key! Keep the old one in my wallet as a spare should I get locked out (again!!!)

I'll see whether Timpson can do it at lunchtime. Thinking about it - that's now. I'm a bit doubtful though...

My car came with an immobiliser thing which looks like a mounted flat watch battery.

The car is a 94 M, the key is just plain. Anybody know if this was standard fit and where I can get a spare done?

Update - they can do the immobiliser keyblob: they had a little electronic machine that presumably pings it for the code. Didn't have the key blanks in stock though so had to order a couple - £25 a throw, ouch.

Thats cheap compared to a more modern car key. Think somewhere north of £100. Bloody technology.
