Guys,

Our 92/93 K reg MX-5 has over 190k miles on it, slight rust on one of the rear arches and is need of new tyres all round + tax etc.

It hasn't moved for a while (apart from to get it out of the way of the garage so I can wash the other cars) and although I had plans to do it up and track it that's realistically not going to happen for a couple of years.

So i'm thinking of getting rid, it's obviously not worth much so am I better off stripping it (dual exit exhaust etc) and then just putting it in for scrap? If I could get £300 for it I would be happy for it to go (so possibly just shove it on ebay with a reserve of a couple of hundred quid?)

I don't want to see it go but it's in the way!

Cheers,
Phill

Ebay is your friend! Ive sold cars i thought were worthless in past with no MOT and got a fai bit more than expected.

Are the tyres road legal? how much tread is left?

Has it got MOT?

How bad is rust?

Rears are on the minimum.

Rust is just on one rear arch and not too bad.

No MOT/Tax

Reckon I might spend some time getting it polished up and then put it on ebay and see how it goes. If it doesn't sell i'll just strip it for parts.

Any chance of some pics and more details of your mx5?

Ie, 1.6 or 1.8? Uk model or eunos roadster?

Whereabouts are you as well, this might do a friend as project.

Hi Rob.

I'm in Leighton Buzzard (just outside Milton Keynes).

The car is a UK 1.6 which my wife brought approx 2 years ago.

It's white in colour, with a sticky plate on the front, clear indicators (front and side), electric windows and ariel, dual exit exhaust.

Will get some pictures sorted for you tomorrow.

It's a project for someone (I was planning on stripping it down to run as a track toy this year but our first child has got in the way of that!)

Cheers,
Phill

If you're able you'll make more than £300 on Nutz as a parts breaker...

Has the MOT just ran out or did it fail?

Do you think you might get it through another one?

Even in a pretty rough condition with a full years MOT on it, you shoulD get a grand back on it.

On the other hand if its not gonna get an MOT you'll be as well breaking it i guess - try via Nutz.

Or as others have suggested stick it on ebay in current condition. It runs, its just out of MOT & Tax - I think it'll go for more than £300. I've sold a couple of other sheds on there with blown engines and all sorts and they've fetched far more than i expected.

I may be interested in this actually...!

Let me know what's up with it overall as I'm planning to chuck a grand at getting mine fixed up but it may prove uneconomical due to the amount of potential work needed (Still awaiting the list showing what's needed to be done) & as much as I want it fixed again due to sentimental value I might have to let it go frown

Hi Dan/Umair,

Basically I was given another car in October so decided not to tax the 5 at that point and just SORN it. I think the MOT is actually due this month but i'm not sure on the specific date.

The car hasn't been driven since October and currently has a flat battery (doh) and is slightly damp inside (easy to sort out with a good clean).

Bodywork wise:

  • It needs a good polish all over (i had the front resprayed/NS headlight cover/side wing sprayed not long after we got it after a little parking incident involving another PHer).
  • Laguna splitter on the front
  • Clear indicators / front side
  • Right rear arch is bubbling but hasn't broken through yet
  • It has a respray to the rear end in a previous life (you can see it where the bodywork meets the roof)
  • There are a few brown (rust) specs at the bottom of both front arches
To get it through an MOT I would say it needs a quick service (oil change) and four new tyres. The rear tyres on are on the wear limits and the front left has a slow puncture.

Interior wise:

  • Seats are unmarked but faded
  • No radio (took it out to put in the Impreza)
Mods:

  • Laguna splitter
  • Clear side repeaters/front indicators
  • Relay out so that you can run sidelights without the pop up's
  • Dual exit exhaust from MX5Parts
  • Front sticky plate
  • Standard wheels painted black
Other:

  • I have a set of lowering springs in the garage that I've not got around to fitting
  • I think I have a spare set of pads as well but I can't remember if they are front or rear.
Wish I had got rid of it at the end of last year but the plan was to get the garage cleared and give myself a project but funds and my time have been limited due to the arrival of our boy in October.

I have tried to be completely honest with you guys about the condition, it may be a high miler but it only let me down twice (when I left the bloody lights on!) and I'd rather it went to a good home for a project for someone instead of breaking it up.

Cheers,
Phill

Well Umair has first refusal (at £400) but if his car is able to come back from the dead I'll let you know.

O/T Must organise some more local beers again

Thats fair enough.

Was out in LB on Friday and did think of sending you a message but time got away from me.

My mate has moved from the house down the road but is renting to a mate (who is car less). So win win!

In case anyone is interested in Phil's car and wants new tyres to get it through the MOT, then I have a set of 15" MS-03 RAYS MazdaSpeed alloys with legal tread for sale for £150. Why is this anything to do with this thread you may wonder? Well the alloys are currently sitting about 50 yards from Phil's biggrin
